Regulation (EC) No 178/2002
General Food Law (consolidated)
In short
The General Food Law binds food business operators directly, and Member States on national enforcement and the rapid alert system. Operators are responsible for food in their business, must trace it one step up and one step down the chain, and must withdraw, recall and notify where needed. These operator duties have applied since 1 January 2005 and reach small food businesses as much as large ones.
The proposed European Biotech Act would also amend this Regulation, but it is a proposal and has not been adopted.
