Regulation (EU) 2025/40, Art. 5(5)
PFAS limits for food contact packaging under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, Art. 5(5)
In short
Since 12 August 2026, food-contact packaging may not be placed on the EU market if it contains PFAS at or above set limits: 25 ppb for any single PFAS, 250 ppb for the sum of PFAS, or 50 ppm for PFAS including polymers. The rule binds companies directly. Where total fluorine exceeds 50 mg/kg, the chemical supplier must on request show how much is PFAS, so the packaging maker can complete its technical documentation.
The packaging format bans in Article 25(1) are separate and apply from 1 January 2030, not from this date.
