Directive 2006/118/EC
Groundwater Directive
In short
The Groundwater Directive is a daughter directive of the Water Framework Directive and binds Member States only. It tells them how to assess the chemical status of groundwater and set threshold values. No company makes any filing, permit or report under it; a small water utility that abstracts groundwater is affected only through the abstraction permit issued by its national regulator.
Amendments made by Directive (EU) 2026/805, including a new groundwater watch list, must be transposed into national law by 21 December 2027.
Where it sits
